On the skate park the discussion will regularly arises about which is best – stunt scooters or skateboards. Admittedly boarders will never say that stunt scooters are better or likewise, and it could be said that it is a daft question and you should simply choose to ride whichever you like best.
However for the sake of discussion here are a number of different categories which rate stunt scooters and skateboards based on each to see if we can come to a conclusion of which is the best extreme sport overall.
Cost of use – good scooters don’t come for cheap, and with the amount of green that can be spent on new wheels, decks and bars costs and rise even higher. Skateboards are usually cheaper initially and parts are fewer and cheaper, so the cost of riding them is lower than scooters.
Looks and style – because of their size the designs of stunt scooters are often more differed and more unique compared to skateboards which have to be fairly standard and offer little in the way of style. Skateboards often have cool designs and graffiti stickers on them but scooters have the edge looks wise overall.
Ease of use – stunt scooters are very easy to pick up and start riding without any past experience, even for people with poor balance or who are afraid to, and tricks such as simple jumps and tail whips can be learned within a couple of hours. Conversely, skateboard are hard to balance on and ride steadily, and even the most simple of stunts such as a basic ollie takes hours and hours to learn and even longer to perfect.
Tricks and stunts – skateboards are great as they were the first extreme sport and set the way for a catalogue of great tricks and grinds. Scooters really take these tricks to the next level, with a huge range of tricks that simply can’t be done on a skateboad – air tricks, land tricks and grinds.
Fun and entertainment – it could be argued that you can have great fun on stunt scooters or skateboards depending on how skilled you get, so it is hard to choose a winner in this category, it depends really what you are looking for in an extreme sport and how difficult you want it to be.
Coolness – on the skate park it is not unheard of to get negative comments from skateboarders, BMXers and roller bladers for riding a stunt scooter, although this is usually due to just the lower age of riders. Whatever the scenario there is no argument stunt scooters are seen as being less cool compared with skateboards, although as they get mainstream and more people take up the extreme sport it is only a matter of time before they become more accepted and cooler.
All – a close and tough fought contest, and each with dedicated fans which will tell you their’s is the best. However, the line has to be drawn and given these categories and the discussion, it is clear to us stunt scooters are better than skateboards due to their ease of use, cool tricks and great looks.
